What is an Elf?
An Abundance Elf is anyone who spreads magic, luck, and abundance by 1) giving anonymous gifts to random people, 2) including an Abundance By Magic calling card so that the recipients know what’s up, and 3) writing a blog post to tell us all how it went. That’s it!
Do I have to give big?
Of course not! Not AT ALL. I maintain that some of the very best gifts in the world are under two dollars. How about gifting someone a hot chocolate? Or a single rose? Maybe a gift certificate for a free ice-cream? Once I left a container of bubbles on the passenger seat of someone’s parked convertible, because really, who doesn’t love bubbles?
But what if I want to give big, and I can’t afford to?
I really do believe that small gifts can be more meaningful than big ones, but I also know that sometimes it’s fun to do more. If you want to give big but can’t quite swing it in your current budget, I am here to help. I am pledging $50 per week ($2500 annually) to empower an Elf giving program. That means that every single Tuesday, a randomly-chosen Elf will win $50 of gifting money, to gift however (and to whomever) that Elf pleases. The only “string” is that I strongly encourage Elves to write a post about their giving experience so that we can all share in the fun.
So how does it work?
Upon signing up to be an Elf, you will be 1) mailed some Abundance By Magic calling cards, and 2) e-mailed a username and password so that you can log on and blog your own posts to the site. For instructions on how to post, please read the Elf FAQ.
Once you receive your cards, you are ready to begin! You might already know exactly who you want to gift. If you don’t, I suggest simply going about your regular day, alert to wonderful people. It may be a random stranger you see in a coffee shop or on the street. It may be someone you learn about in your local paper, or someone you learned about online. It might even be a neighbor, or someone you work with. Just wait for inspiration to hit, and trust that it will. Then, when the right moment presents itself, jump on it! If your heart thumps and your spirit soars, then you know it was the right move.
Remember to include an Abundance By Magic card along with your gift, signing your Elf name (and perhaps a short note) to the back of your card. That way, when your recipient logs onto the site, they can leave thanks to you by name. You can also feel free to make your own cards if you like — you are not required to use only the cards you are sent. It’s all good!
The weekly drawing will take place every Tuesday (henceforth to be known as “Elf Tuesday”) with me picking a name out of a hat. If I pull your name, I will 1) post about it on the site, 2) notify you by e-mail, and 3) send you $50 by PayPal or through Giving Anonymously.
Once you receive the money, it is yours to gift in whatever way you like, to whomever you choose. Some people like to give it all in one chunk, and some like to split it up. Do whatever feels best. All I ask is that you post to tell us all how it went. (I think that a HUGE part of the gift — and usually, the bigger part — is when the recipient comes to the site and gets to read all about why you picked them, and what made them special.)
Are there any other benefits to being an Elf?
Yes, there is another fun draw for Elves: Elf Elviolith, who is an intuitive and a card reader, has offered to hold a monthly drawing for a free intuitive card reading for any interested Elves. You can enter this drawing by clicking on the appropriate checkbox in the form below.
Are there any downsides to being an Elf?
I’m not sure that there are any true downsides, but I do want to prepare everyone that there is always a risk of rejection involved with giving gifts. Most people are thrilled to be on the receiving end, but occasionally you may stumble upon a recipient who is not open to the experience. And that’s OK too! It happens, no big deal. It is never personal.
Also, you should be prepared that not everyone will come to the website to thank you. It feels utterly awesome when it happens, but not everyone is web savvy and knows to visit. Others are just plain shy, which I more than understand. Nothing wrong with that. Just know that it is never wrong to give a gift, and that even if your gift is rejected or not acknowledged, you are sure to have spread some magic.
